TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF DURING YOUR CHILD’S ADDICTION:

Getting treatment for your child has been life consuming. You are most likely not thinking about yourself right now but it is equally important to take care of number one – you. You need to remain strong, healthy and calm in order to best help your child.
Below are some suggestions for ways to take care of yourself during this emotionally draining time:

• Seek professional counseling for yourself – You are probably angry, scared, guilt ridden, ashamed and unsure of your next step. All normal feelings under the circumstances. Seek referrals from your insurance company, your employer’s EAP, or mental health clinics. Many counselors also offer family counseling to help everyone deal with their feelings.

• Find a Support Group – Look for a local support group in your community. It is important to know you are not alone. All meetings are confidential. It may be difficult to share your story but you will be talking to others who are in similar situations. These parents are the only ones who can truly understand what you are going through.
